Highlights from April 28, 2007 Board meeting in South Charleston

Attendees: Ted Williams, Kitty Palausky, Marilyn Smith, Taylor Perry, Peggy Lewis, Violette Eash, Martha Jarrell, Virginia Shelhammer, Sandra Mortimer, Charlie Kuhn, Dan Henderson, Leigh-Ann Brewer.

• The Board voted that from 1 July 2006 through the remainder of this present administration that Leigh-Ann Brewer's board meeting notes will be considered supplemental to Martha Jarrell's official board minutes.
• Mike Fike was recognized and honored by the board for his many years of faithful service. Mike has been Vice President of the North Central Region of WVCA, President of WVSCA, President of WVCA, and he is currently the treasurer for WVCA. Although Mike was not here due to fulfilling other obligations, he was presented with gifts. The gifts were later mailed to him. Thanks, Mike!
• A retroactive vote was taken to change the student member fee from $25.00 to $5.00 which was agreed upon.
• A retroactive vote was taken concerning regular membership fees. It was agreed that from 15 April til 30 June, 2007 regular membership fees would be reduced to $45.00 instead of $50.00. Beginning 1 July 2007, regular membership fees will return to $50.00.
• During some statistical analysis, it was discovered that WVCA's membership had grown over 200% from 1 July 2006 - 15 April 2007. Within that number, we found that 40% of our membership are LPCs and 30% are school counselors.
• The Board has increased its membership, so President Henderson reiterated his goals for the organization by reading highlights from his 'position paper' in hopes that the board would be working from the same page.
• The Eastern Region is planning a workshop for 1 June 2007. Planned presenters are Warren Watts and Barbara Blackburn.
• Virginia Loew-Shelhammer was voted as interim Northern Region Representative, til regular elections are held at the October conference.
• A Spring Conference has been scheduled for Friday 18 May 2007 at the West Virginia Rehabilitation Center in Institute, WV. The two presenters will be Dr. Violette Eash and Kitty Palausky. Kitty Palausky's daughter has been hired to cater the event.
• A state-wide student bulletin board has been created for counseling students to communicate with each other and counseling mentors (professors, staff, faculty, etc). The bulletin board e-mail address is: wvcastudents@yahoo.com. Students and Counseling Mentors interested in joining the bulletin board can contact the bulletin board moderator, Leigh-Ann Brewer at brewer13@marshall.edu.
• Sandra Mortimer was voted interim leader for the division of specialists in group work.
• Dr. Taylor Perry invites everyone to join the Multicultural Division. Dr. Perry is in transit to Africa to relax and experience other cultures.
• Thanks to Jane Turner, who produced the latest WVCA Leadership handbook. These handbooks were distributed to the board members. Further discussion on proposed changes will be held.
• A discussion was held about whether WVCA would be represented only by our NBCC provider number or whether WVCA would acquire a WVBEC number as well. The board voted to pursue a WVBEC provider number.
• The next WVCA Board mtg. was scheduled for Morgantown, Sat 21 July 2007 at 10:00 am.
